Absit Omen

September 3, 2008

ABSIT OMEN – exclam. used to express the hope that what is threatened may not become fact.

This is a phrase that you’ll probably never ever use unless you find yourself having a latin conversation with a very old person.  It does, however, fascinate me and it seems to carry some artistic weight with it.  The majority of modern references to absit omen on the internet are artistic in nature.  There is a theatre company, Absit Omen Theatre, and some works of art, a couple of which can be seen here.  Interesting.
